I’m copying and pasting a forum post I made today because I’m lazy.
This was made in response to a post at Hardcore Casual about WAR’s servers emptying, and why it’s happening. And why it’s not even because WAR is bad (hint: it’s not).
Yeah, see, it’s that ‘noob factor’ that’s gone. When i first rolled my first ever WoW toon, it took me 3 weeks to get to level 10. Wailing Caverns was awesome, the center of my world. Scarlet Monastery was spoken about in hushed awe. A ‘tank’ that used a shield was revered, a healer that actually HEALED was worshipped. Getting 5 okes together to go traipse through some dungeon was awesome, and dinging was a cause for great celebration rather than just a bump on the highway to the level cap. I didn’t know about raiding, or pvp, or balance issues or optimal dps builds or whatever. I was a ‘kid’, wide eyed and amazed at every little thing I saw.
In Warhammer it took me exactly 3 or 4 hours of play to grasp the gameplay. It took me a couple days to powerlevel to Tier2. My sole motivation for playing it now is to get to T4 and start ‘the endgame’, as rolling any new WoW toon would be. I don’t explore it’s world, I queue up the next scenario, or follow the red spots on my map like a levelling automaton.
Nothing really excites me about the game but that’s not the game’s fault. I’m just ruined for MMO’s. Nothing will ever recapture my first ever jaunt through Barrens – and it’s not because Barrens was so well developed (hah!), but because the very concept of running around a vast area and bumping into *gasp* other players was completely new and alien and incalculably cool to me.
It would take something really crazy to impress me now. WAR doesn’t do it. WotLK won’t do it. Aion won’t, Guild Wars 2 won’t. Prettier graphics and slight variations on content and gameplay are not enough any more.
Oh I’m enjoying WAR, and WoW, but it’s more like a comfortable clutch, a lingering ‘alcoholism’ that will never be as good as that first, drunken schoolboy night spent in a booze-fueled haze.
I’m jaded. We all are. And it’s rather sad.
This post says exactly how i feel, i think WoW Spoilt the MMO market for future games mostly because it came along at the right time and gave us such freedom. First time i walked across the bridge in stormwind with those hero’s statues i was in awe!
